Taking over the Reins of Director

The Tarpan horse is a truely special animal that will capture your heart (and any food in your pocket). A very special thank you to Lynda and all her efforts over the years. Her dedication to this breed has been invaluable.

The work of the NATA is critical in maintaining the viability of the breed. I look forward to working with our members and other organizations to ensure the successful future of this breed.

Happy Trails,
Julia
Brightfields Tarpans

NATA Changes

Well, after 8 years of involvement with Tarpans, and 7 years as Director of the NATA, I have decided to hand the reins to a new Director for some fresh energy and direction.

It was in 2003 that I imported a herd of 28 Tarpans from the US to Canada, after a year of research and discussion with former Director Candy Vorderbrug. Some of that herd have since died, and many of the remainder are no longer reachable to help in the preservation of the breed. However, I do not regret bringing them here. In the last 5 years we have developed a strong group of Tarpan supporters, who are working hard to bring the numbers up and promote the breed. Many Tarpans are now trained to ride and drive, and are showing off in parades and shows across Canada. I am grateful to them.

Julia Bright of Alabama, USA, will be taking over as Director. Julia became a Tarpan owner/breeder in October 2003, and has lots of enthusiasm for the great task ahead of her. I know that both the breed and the NATA are in good hands with her, and I wish her all the best!

For reasons of practicality, I will be continuing in the role of Treasurer for the NATA.

Thanks everyone, for your encouragement and support, and I hope that 2009 will be a time of renewed energy in the fight to save this lovely, unique horse breed!

Kind regards,
Lynda Konrad

NATA Meeting

We sure accomplished a lot at our meeting this evening! Thank you to everyone for coming, and for being willing to discuss some hard questions!
Welcome to Eric and Lorraine Dane, who attended their first meeting tonight - we're thrilled to have your involvement!
Carla will have the minutes ready shortly, and we'll get them out to our members, but here are some highlights.
Our membership application and our application for certificate of heritage were approved tonight, and will be sent out to all interested parties immediately. They'll also be available online. Our focus this year will be on improving the visibility of the Tarpan; we plan to have Tarpans in parades and in shows throughout the season. Watch the web site for information on where you can meet a Tarpan; and if you are a Tarpan owner, let us know where you'll be showing so we can tell everyone!
There was a lot of discussion on the Breed Recognition project; before we can apply for status, we need to find out if the breed is officially recognised in Germany. We also need to spend both time and money to get DNA work done on as many Tarpans as possible. More information on that will be available when Gus Cothran is settled in his new office at Texas A&M and is available to talk about it.
Lynda

The local members of the NATA Executive are preparing for a meeting this Sunday (March 19, 2006), at which we hope to address a number of big issues. On the agenda are approval of the new membership forms and applications for registration, the beginning of a DNA project aimed at future breed recognition, and a plan for the continued conservation of the breed.
